Looking for a cheat sheet of the top 20 players to draft at each position? Here's our take on the elite RBs in the nation that you should be targeting in the early rounds of your draft. We listed our Top 20 QBs yesterday and will list our Top 20 WRs and Top 20 TEs on Friday.
Fantasy MVPs
1. Darren McFadden, Arkansas (1647 RuYd, 14 RuTD, 149 ReYd,1 ReTD) - Depending on your scoring system, this could be the top fantasy scorer in the nation this year. McFadden is a contender for the Heisman and should be in the Top 3 Picks of most any fantasy college football draft that includes an SEC talent pool.
2. Ian Johnson (pic left via Boise Real Estate), Boise State (1714 RuYd, 25 RuTD) - Johnson will be the heart and soul of the Broncos offense this year with the graduation of QB Jared Zabransky, but that means he can expect to see a lot of 8-man fronts. Expect another great year, but his numbers will probably drop a little.
3. Steve Slaton, West Virginia (1744 RuYd, 16 RuTD, 360 ReYd, 2 ReTD) - It's pretty amazing that Slaton and QB Pat White can both produce such impressive fantasy numbers out of the same backfield, but that's life in Rich Rodriguez's high-powered offense. Slaton will certainly dominate again as he makes a statement on his way to the NFL.
4. Ray Rice, Rutgers (1794 RuYd, 20 RuTD) - Rice was second in the nation in rushing last season, and Rutgers returns almost it's entire starting lineup at the skill positions. The biggest loss will be versatile fullback Brian Leonard, so somebody else will need to pick up the key blocks and take the focus off Rice. We still expect him to dominate.
5. P.J. Hill, Wisconsin (1569 RuYd, 15 RuTD, 197 ReYD, 1 ReTD) - Hill was a surprise fantasy impact player last year for the Badgers and the expectation is that he will surpass his 2006 stats to be one of the best running backs in the nation in 2007. The biggest knock on Hill would that his running style lends itself to injuries (a neck injury interfered last year and offseason shoulder surgery erased his spring camp attendance), but we expect Hill to be blowing through the line come September.
Fantasy Studs
6. Mike Hart (pic left via Bleacher Report), Michigan (1562 RuYd, 14 RuTD, 125 ReYD) - Hart has been the sparkplug for the Michigan offense for the past three years and we expect much of the same this year. Last year, Hart stayed pretty healthy and racked up impressive numbers. He'll be a leader in the stats category again if he can stay on the field.
7. Yvenson Bernard, Oregon State (1307 RuYd, 12 RuTD, 276 ReYd, 1 ReTD) - Bernard is already the third-leading rusher in OSU history and he still has a year to go. Bernard may slip under the radar a little bit because Oregon State isn't usually a fantasy hotbed for talent, but he may end up with the best RB stats in the Pac 10 this year.
8. Brandon Ore, Virgina Tech (1137 RuYd, 16 RuTD, 214 ReYd, 1 ReTD) - Ore was a beast last year and there is no indication that he is going to slow down. Look for him to continue his dominance.
9. Justin Forsett, California (626 RuYd, 4 RuTD, 116 ReYd, 1 ReTD) - Remember Marshawn Lynch (1245 RuYd, 9 RuTD, ReYd, 4 ReTD)? Well, Forsett is the guy who gets to scoop up all those stats. He's the clear number 1 for the Bears and will get a ton of touches (running and receiving) this season.
10. Kalvin McRae, Ohio (1252 RuYd, 15 RuTD, 280 ReYd, 1 ReTD) - McRae gets the award for best RB you've probably never heard of. That's life in the MAC for ya, but the senior hopes to make himself a household name this season.
Fantasy Standouts
11. Amir Pinnix (pic left via ViewImages), Minnesota (1272 RuYd, 10 RuTD, 138 ReYd)
12. James Davis, Clemson (1817 RuYd, 17 RuTD, 115 ReYd)
13. Jorvorskie Lane, Texas A&M (725 RuYd, 19 RuTD)
14. Tashard Choice, Georgia Tech (1473 RuYd, 12 RuTD)
15. Ontario Sneed, Central Michigan (764 RuYd, 4 RuTD, 415 ReYd, 7 ReTD)
16. Allen Patrick, Oklahoma (761 RuYd, 4 RuTD)
17. Shannon Woods, Texas Tech (926 RuYd, 10 RuTD, 572 ReYd, 2 ReTD)
18. Benjarvus Green-Ellis, Ole Miss (999 RuYd, 7 RuTD)
19. Kyle Bell, Colorado State (Did not play in 2006)
20. Damion Fletcher, Southern Miss (1388 RuYd, 11 RuTD, 115 ReYd)
