News: "Notre Dame will use Big East [football] officiating crews this season instead of crews from the Big Ten." That's all the little blurb, at the bottom of an SI.com article about the ND QB battle, said. However, you'd think if that 12th slot the Big 10 has left for ND over the years was really going to South Bend, ND wouldn't be switching to officials from the Big East conference.
Not to mention the 2005 scheduling deal that ND struck with the Big East. Comments like " . . . the Big East has been a very beneficial relationship for us, and Mike T. encouraged us to do what we could, specifically if we would consider the prospect of making more of a commitment" does make it seem like the thought has crossed a few minds over in South Bend.
You have to think that Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese is sitting a lot prettier now compared to when the ACC gutted him and his league a few years ago. Just don't ask him to give a convincing smile about it.
Pre Pro Sports Take: Notre Dame Football will join the Big East in the next 3-5 years when the BCS contract (and playoff system) starts to benefit the conferences more than one independent school, the realization that ND recruiting is hurt by being independent, and the prospect of playing an easier Big East schedule vs. a Big 10 schedule becomes obvious. Plus, none of the other sports will have to change anything they are doing right now.
Fantasy College Impact: Well, if Notre Dame does move into a conference, you'll have to figure out if having that exclusive Big Ten + Notre Dame player pool makes sense anymore. And will you enjoy the other schools in the Big East (West Virginia, Rutgers, Louisville, etc) enough to make a move to include them, too?
Question of the Day: What would they name the Big East with Notre Dame added into the mix? Put in a comment below and we'll vote on the best ideas.

New Conference Name for Starters: Big B.E.N.D. Conference (Big East and Notre Dame)
New Conference Name - Bigger East
In my opinion, this move is long overdue on a number of fronts. ND has been living off the Big East tit in non-revenue sports and men’s basketball for far too long. There was a time when ND served a purpose to the BE. They helped the BE bowl situation by being a part of the BE bowl package. Those days are no longer. At the present, outside of the BCS bowl for the BE (which ND is not a part of), the BE bowl situation is horrid. The Gator Bowl is the only respectable bowl outside of the BCS for the Big East. The Gator Bowl has negotiated a deal with the Big 12 that allows them to take a team from that conf. on a rotating basis relegating the BE #2 to the Sun Bowl in El Paso in years the Gator goes with a Big 12 team! Is a deal with ND necessary? With or without ND in the bowl package, the BE has an auto-BCS bid. Should the BE be a slave to ND so the BE can send a 10+ win team to El Paso in late December? I realize that ND has also said they will schedule a few BE football games per year, but what was said in the paper in the past year has necessarily come to fruition as yet.
I say give ND an ultimatum, join in all sports or take your basketball team back to independent status and see how that floats. If it's anything like the 80's...it's back to mediocrity for ND hoops. There was a time when ND could garner a sweet heart deal with the league, but those days are gone. The league is improving in football and the basketball league has no need for ND if they would choose to leave.
Yeah, but Jay, what would you call the new league :)
Here's what I say...if ND joins the Big East...the name would stick, but a clause would have to be stated nationwide that any heretofore reference to the Big East as the Big Least would be punishable by lifetime ban from watching college football. No questions asked…you call it the Big Least…you’re done.
To me, the better question is when is the Big 10 going to get with the program. Don’t give me this boocockie about PSU being represented by that little 11 in the logo. It’s the Big 11 or it’s not. What if ND joins the Big 10(11). The problem may not be ND, the Big 10(11) may not know what to do about the name if they let the Irish in.
Notre Dame Field at Big East Park
Gag.
Truth be told, as a fan of a BE school, I would like to see ND in the conference to bolster the schedules of league members and eliminate credibility questions.
Big Jesus
Mediocre East

Big Spin
that's it, I hope one is good
Well ND is in the Big East for bball so it makes sense...
Not going to happen.
it will never happen...
More than 61,000 Notre Dame alumni requested tickets for the school’s Oct. 20 football game against USC, making it the second-most demanded ticket in school history. The 61,685 tickets sought for the game is second only to the 66,670 alumni ticket requests received for last year’s Penn State game, the school said.
This is absolutley amazing, the game is more 4 months away! ..And USC will probably blow out the happy-go-lucky Irish anyway!
