We're still not sure what the appeal of playing in redneck West Virginia is, but it certainly proves how good of a recruiter head coach Rich Rodriguez is.
Fantasy College Impact: West Virginia is locked and loaded for 2007 with the return of fantasy gods QB Pat White and RB Steve Slaton; and the future is looking extremely bright as well with the addition of RB recruit Noel Devine (who chose the Mountaineers over Florida State, despite the best efforts of Deion Sanders).
At QB, junior Pat White (1524 PaYd, 11 PaTD, 7 PaINT, 1074 RuYd, 17 RuTD) returns for his junior season to do more damage with his arm and he legs -- note the 17 RdTD...not too shabby for a QB. Junior Jarrett Brown (384 PaYd, 2 PaTD, 1 PaINT, 176 RuYd, 3 RuTD) proved to be a capable backup in the couple of games he got extended playing time. He may be the starter in 2008 if White decides to go pro. Recruit Bradley Starks could be the QB of the future and fits the dual-threat mode that head coach Rich Rodriguez fancies.
At RB, junior Steve Slaton (1733 RuYd, 16 RuTD, 340 ReYd, 2 ReTD) will probably lead the Big East in rushing (if he can hold off White). Last year, the only other RB who scored any valuable fantasy points was FB Owen Schmitt (242 RuYd, 5 RuTD), who returns for his senior season. Rodriguez has said that he wants to find a third guy to take some of the load off this year, and the leading candidate is sophomore Eddie Davis. Davis will just be a placeholder this year though if he makes any noise because Noel Devine, the top-rated all around RB according to Rivals, is definitely the future.
With all of the success of the running game, the WRs suffer, especially with the graduation of Brandon Myles. The clear No. 1 is senior Darius Reynaud (520 ReYd, 2 ReTD), but he'll be a sporadic fantasy starter at best.
Forget the Fantasy College Trifecta here, the Mountaineers feature a powerhouse Fantasy College Deuce with Pat White and Steve Slaton.
It's an interesting name for a blog, but check out the Bastard Sons of Pinfall Marks for more West Virginia info.
